Five months past the tariff shock

trough back to the old high

104 trading days · 2025-04-09 → 2025-09-10

What happened that day?

  • From the low on 9 April 2025 to 10 September, the KOSPI rose 44.51% over 104 trading days
  • The starting point was the day the US said it would pause its reciprocal tariffs. The plunge of the preceding days was simply undone
  • Korean shares are unusually sensitive to tariffs. Exports make up a large share of earnings, and chips and cars in particular depend on the US market
  • Demand for memory used in artificial intelligence arrived on top of that. The makers of the expensive high-performance memory are concentrated in Korea
  • A small number of large companies did the lifting. That is why the index rose while it did not feel that way
  • The KOSPI passed the three thousand level in this stretch, after being stuck below it for years
