Twenty months that finally broke the range

+22.48%

trough back to the old high

418 trading days · 2015-08-24 → 2017-05-04

What happened that day?

  • From the low on 24 August 2015 to 4 May 2017, the KOSPI rose 22.48% over 418 trading days
  • From 2011 the KOSPI had moved only within a narrow band for years. It was stuck long enough to earn a nickname for it
  • This is the stretch that broke through the top of that band, exceeding the 2011 high after six years
  • Semiconductors made the breakout. Demand from servers and phones grew together and memory prices rose sharply
  • The profits of that boom concentrated in a few large companies. The index was at a record while most shares were not
  • Domestic politics were in turmoil through 2016, and the market barely reacted. Earnings outweighed politics
  • The advance ran on into January of the following year
