single-day change vs previous close
Part of a longer stretch
Four months as China's market broke
midway through · 2015-04-23 → 2015-08-24, -15.81% over the whole period
What happened that day?
- The KOSPI fell 2.4% on the day
- Chinese shares were falling more than a third in a few weeks, after more than doubling over the preceding year
- Chinese authorities acted hastily — halting new listings, banning sales by large shareholders. Going that far was itself read as a signal of how serious it was
- The same weekend Greece rejected its bailout terms in a referendum, bringing the possibility of leaving the euro back into view
- Korea is among the countries exporting most to China and is directly exposed to Chinese news
- The decline deepened again in August when China devalued the yuan
