The COVID crash
midway through · 2020-01-20 → 2020-03-19, -31.27% over the whole period
What happened that day?
- The Nikkei 225 fell 3.34% on the day
- Cases had surged in Italy, confirming the spread into Europe. Until then it had looked like an Asian problem
- Japan had more riding on it than most, with the summer Olympics ahead. If the Games became doubtful, tourism, construction and advertising shook together
- A cruise ship outbreak was also being reported heavily around the world at the time
- Japanese shares are heavily weighted to exporters and sensitive to world demand, and the yen strengthening in a crisis compounds it
- The decline ran to 19 March, taking close to a third of the index
