Korea's dot-com hangover

early in it · 2000-01-04 → 2001-09-17, -55.74% over the whole period

What happened that day?

  • 18 April 2000 — the KOSPI rose 5.59%
  • The previous session, 17 April, had wiped out a double-digit percentage in one day. This was the recoil
  • It started in the US. The Nasdaq broke down on Friday 14 April, and Korea absorbed all of it on the Monday
  • But the Nasdaq rebounded hard that same Monday night. Tuesday in Korea was that rebound arriving
  • Through this stretch the KOSPI tracked American tech a day behind — semiconductors and telecoms dominated the index
  • The bounce changed nothing. The episode low came in late May, 38.06% below the January high
  • That 17 April drop still ranks as the third-largest single day in KOSPI history
