Korea's dot-com hangover

What happened that day?

  • 10 January 2001 — the KOSPI fell 4.93%. No single cause for that one day could be pinned down
  • On 3 January the US Fed had cut rates at an unscheduled meeting. World markets jumped on it and Korea with them
  • Within a week much of that was handed back. A surprise cut signals help — and signals how bad things are
  • Korea was watching memory-chip prices fall fast at the time, with much of its exports riding on them
  • From the September 2000 high to the 10 April 2001 low the index fell 24.45%
  • Past that low, the recovery ran through the rest of the year
