still below that peak today
What happened that day?
- From the high on 25 June 2026 to the low on 29 July, the Nikkei 225 fell 15.11% over 23 trading days
- The cause was the same as Korea's: doubt that AI capital spending could be justified
- Japan's channel was the chip equipment makers, whose customers are the Korean and Taiwanese fabs
- It fell less than Korea because of what is in it. Banks, trading houses and domestic sectors held the index up
- It came straight after a record high in mid-June — the further it had run, the more it gave back
- The bounce began on 31 July
- The old high is still not back
