What happened that day?
- The Nikkei 225 rose 4.71% on the day. 9 October had been the bottom of this bear market
- In 1973 Middle Eastern producers restricted oil exports and the price quadrupled
- Japan, importing all of its oil, was hit especially hard. Inflation passed twenty percent
- Society shook enough for people to hoard toilet paper, and the economy contracted that year for the first time since the war
- The crisis redirected Japanese industry. Moving toward using less oil is what let its small cars and electronics take world markets
- The recovery that began at this bottom ran to 1978
