What happened that day?

  • 11 October 2001 — the Nikkei 225 rose 3.83%. No single cause for that one day could be pinned down
  • Prices had been coming back since the 17 September low, with world markets recovering together
  • Central banks had cut rates and pushed out money in between. Much of why prices returned so fast sits there
  • Japan's own position was bad: bank losses uncleared and prices in the economy falling
  • So this retracement did not hold either. The episode low came in early February the following year
  • From the late-June high to the February 2002 low the index fell 27.78%
