What happened that day?

  • From the low on 17 September 2001 to the high on 18 April 2002, the KOSPI rose 100.02% over 142 trading days
  • The index doubled in seven months, among the fastest advances in KOSPI history
  • The heaviest fall after the attacks in the US came on 12 September. 17 September was the closing low that followed it
  • The starting point was countries cutting rates and supplying money all at once
  • At home a policy of greatly expanding credit card use came on top of it. Spending revived quickly and domestic-demand shares rose sharply
  • That policy led, a few years later, to a surge in people unable to repay their card balances
  • After this high, shares fell for close to a year
