What happened that day?
- The KOSPI fell 2.2% on the day, the first session of 2014
- The US Fed began actually reducing its bond buying that January — the thing that had been signalled for months finally starting
- The yen was weakening at the same time, worsening the terms for Korean firms competing with Japanese ones in cars and machinery
- The KOSPI had been stuck in a narrow band for years by now, capped on the way up and held on the way down
- Where earnings do not grow much, prices do not rise. This period shows that plainly
- It broke out of the band with the semiconductor boom in the second half of 2016
