What happened that day?

  • June 22, 2006 — the Nikkei 225 rose 3.36% to 15,135.69. No single cause for the day could be pinned down
  • Markets everywhere had corrected that spring, as the trade of borrowing cheap money to buy risky assets unwound
  • Part of that unwind was the expectation that the Bank of Japan would end its zero rate. The hike itself came that July
  • The correction's low had been nine days earlier, on June 13. This was the day the bounce took hold
  • It was the second largest one-day gain of the year and the highest close since June 6
  • From April 7 to June 13 the episode ran -19.04%
  • The index recovered it by year-end
