The AI wobble and the tariff shock

near the end of it · 2024-12-16 → 2025-04-08, -24.32% over the whole period

What happened that day?

  • The Nasdaq fell 5.82% on the day, a second consecutive heavy fall
  • China announced retaliatory tariffs across US goods. Tariffs moved from a one-sided measure to something exchanged both ways
  • Technology falls hardest because of supply chains. Parts come from many countries, assembly happens in one, and the product sells worldwide — so a tariff at any step raises cost
  • China matters not only as cost but as a market. Retaliation blocks the selling side too
  • The Nasdaq lost more than ten percent across the two days, its fastest decline since the covid crash
  • The bottom came four sessions later on 8 April, and the next day's tariff pause produced its second-largest gain on record
