What happened that day?

  • From the record high of June 22, 2026 to the low of October 22, the KOSPI fell 39.29% — 82 trading days
  • The question never changed over those four months: when does the money going into AI build-outs come back as profit? The spending was certain, the return was not
  • A large share of the KOSPI sits in two chip names. Every time the question resurfaced, the index moved with them
  • It looked like the bottom had come in summer. On July 28 the one-day fall ran into double digits and trading was halted; the July 30 close was that leg's low
  • October broke through it. Six of the month's first fifteen sessions moved more than three percent
  • October added an American layer — warnings over the debt behind data centres, and a hotter-than-expected US inflation print that narrowed the room for rate cuts
  • On October 22 the index fell 3.52% to 5,533.77, the lowest close since early April. The Bank of Korea left its policy rate unchanged the same day
  • The episode has yet to regain the prior peak
