What happened that day?

  • From the low on 25 May 2010 to 3 January 2011, the KOSPI rose 32.63% over 154 trading days
  • The KOSPI passed its 2007 record high in this stretch
  • The US Fed began a second round of bond buying that autumn and money flowed heavily into emerging markets
  • At home, chemicals, refining and cars led the advance. Rising Chinese demand lifted profits in those sectors sharply
  • The concentration was strong enough that a shorthand term for those three sectors came into use
  • Concentration like that does not last. Shares fell hard the following spring on Europe's second wave and the fight over America's credit rating
