From the carry unwind to tariffs

What happened that day?

  • 4 September 2024 — the Nikkei 225 fell 4.24%
  • The night before, America's flagship AI-chip stock broke down. Its one-day loss of market value was the largest on record at the time
  • US manufacturing data released the same day was weak — read as a cooling economy
  • Tokyo took it the following morning. The US closes before Asia opens
  • A stronger yen piled on. When the yen rises, exporters' earnings shrink and the index gets pressed
  • The market had only just recovered from the early-August yen-carry unwind, so it was jumpy
  • From the 11 July high to the 5 August low the index fell 25.50%
