The Q4 2018 selloff on the Nasdaq
near the end of it · 2018-08-29 → 2018-12-24, -23.64% over the whole period
What happened that day?
- 4 December 2018 — the Nasdaq fell 3.80%
- Two days earlier the index had risen on news of the US-China summit. That hope unwound here, as it became clear what had actually been agreed was vague
- The same day, short-dated Treasury yields were confirmed above longer-dated ones — read as an early recession signal
- Tech was exposed to both. Parts and assembly span many countries, and the stocks are priced on distant future earnings
- The S&P 500 fell the same day; this is why the Nasdaq fell harder
- US markets closed the next day for a day of mourning, and the session after that fell hard again
- From the late-August high to the 24 December low the index fell 23.64%
