The dot-com bust reaches Tokyo

early in it · 2000-04-12 → 2001-03-13, -43.27% over the whole period

What happened that day?

  • The Nikkei 225 moved 1.51% on the day, and this level is the high of the advance running since 1998
  • The US Nasdaq had broken hard the previous session. A bubble bursting in America crossed to Tokyo within a day
  • Japan had its own run in telecom, software and internet shares from 1999
  • Its telecom carrier's mobile internet service was genuinely widely used, so parts of the story had more behind them than in America
  • Prices had still run far ahead of that story. After this high the Nikkei fell for three more years, to April 2003
  • At that bottom the index was back at its 1982 level
