The five months before the pandemic

early in it · 2019-08-07 → 2020-01-22, +18.72% over the whole period

What happened that day?

  • The KOSPI rose 1.78% on the day. 7 August had been the bottom of this decline
  • Two months into Japan's export curbs, the feared disruption to production had not appeared
  • Korean firms found alternative suppliers and began localising some materials. The restriction had, in effect, forced the supply chain to diversify
  • Hopes were also building that US-China trade talks would resume
  • One lesson came out of this period — concentrating supply in a single country is itself a risk
  • The recovery that began at this bottom ran to January 2020, and was then cut off by the pandemic
