What happened that day?

  • November 1, 2001 — the Nasdaq rose 3.32% to 1,746.30. No single cause for the day could be pinned down
  • The manufacturing data that morning was bad. Rising anyway is what defines the session
  • The worse the data, the deeper the cut — that was the bet. The cut duly came five days later, on November 6
  • This was the recovery leg off the September low, and the second straight gain
  • It took the index back to where it stood ten days earlier — the highest close since October 26
  • The move held through November. The index finished the year's last two months higher
