What happened that day?

  • 19 September 2008 — the Nikkei 225 rose 3.76%
  • Late in the previous US session, word spread that the Treasury was preparing to buy banks' bad assets outright. Tokyo took it the next morning
  • It was the fourth day after Lehman Brothers collapsed, in a week where every day was a crisis
  • Around the same time the major central banks expanded the facilities for lending each other dollars, to stop the dollar drying up
  • Short selling of financial stocks was also restricted — betting on the downside was sealed off for a while
  • Prices rose not because things had improved but because a signal arrived that governments would not let go
  • From the June high to the 27 October low the index fell 50.56%. This bounce was one day inside that
