What happened that day?
- 18 April 2005 — the Nikkei 225 fell 3.80%. No single cause for that one day could be pinned down
- That April brought a run of protests aimed at Japan in several Chinese cities. China was one of the largest markets for Japanese firms
- Oil was also holding at high levels — a direct cost for a country that imports all of it
- In America, technology earnings were coming in below expectations that week and world markets slipped together
- From the early-March high to the mid-May low the index fell 9.54% — short and shallow
- After that low the Nikkei rose sharply through the rest of the year
