What happened that day?

  • From the high on 24 June 2015 to the low on 29 September, the Nikkei fell 18.87% over 65 trading days
  • China's stock market collapsed that summer. Shares bought by individuals on borrowed money were force-sold, deepening the fall
  • In August China devalued the yuan without warning, read as a sign its economy was worse than admitted
  • Japan fell hard because China is its largest trading partner. Machinery, materials and chemicals took it directly
  • At the same time money reducing risk crowded into the yen, making it dearer again
  • China's economy and the yen worked in the same direction, deepening the fall
  • This high was not recovered until October 2017
