The 2025 tariff shock
-18.90%
peak-to-trough, the whole slide
34 trading days · 2025-02-19 → 2025-04-08
back to the old high on 2025-06-27
What happened that day?
- From the 19 February 2025 peak to the 8 April low the S&P 500 fell 18.9% — 34 trading days
- The trigger was a US announcement of broad tariffs across trading partners
- A tariff is a tax on imports. Any company that brings in parts sees its costs rise immediately, and profit falls by the same amount
- When partners answer with tariffs of their own, exports get blocked too, and both sides end up worse off
- Rates and coverage kept changing from one week to the next, leaving companies unable to plan at all
- A pause announced in mid-April started the rebound. The old high returned on 27 June
