still below that peak today
What happened that day?
- From the high on 11 July 2024 to the low on 9 April 2025, the KOSPI fell 20.67% over 179 trading days
- Doubts in the US that artificial intelligence spending had run too far pushed chip shares down first, that summer
- In early August a rate rise in Japan triggered the unwinding of positions funded by borrowed yen, and Asian markets fell together
- In December domestic political upheaval sent the exchange rate sharply higher. A weaker won makes it easy for foreign investors to sell and leave
- The following spring the US announced reciprocal tariffs and the export outlook wobbled
- This phase was not one event but a run of shocks of different kinds over nine months
- The bottom came on 9 April, just before the tariff pause was announced
