What happened that day?
- On 9 April 2025 the S&P 500 rose 9.52% in a single day
- The day before, 8 April, had been the low of the tariff shock
- The reason was the US announcing a 90-day pause on its reciprocal tariffs. China was excluded, which meant the fight between the two largest economies was untouched
- Tariffs were not removed, only deferred by 90 days, and still the reaction was large — because for that window companies could plan
- Policy had been changing week to week, so what got priced was predictability itself rather than the direction
- The bounce carried on and the February high was back by 27 June
