Seoul's chip rout reaches Tokyo

Part of a longer stretch

The same argument, shallower in Tokyo

What happened that day?

  • 28 July 2026 — the Nikkei 225 fell 3.95% to close at 62,364.92
  • Korean stocks collapsed by a double-digit percentage the same day. Tokyo took it in real time — the two markets trade almost the same hours
  • Chip equipment and test-equipment makers and memory firms fell hardest. Japan's damage sat with the companies selling the machines, not the chips
  • US chip stocks had already slid the previous session. This started in America, not in Asia
  • One worry ran through it: the AI capital spending the large technology companies were pouring out had not yet come back as revenue
  • If it does not come back, spending gets cut — and cut spending means less demand for high-bandwidth memory. That arithmetic pushed Korea and Japan down together
  • From the late-June high to the 29 July low the index fell 15.11%. Korea's decline over the same stretch was far deeper
