What happened that day?

  • On 7 May 2009 the Nikkei 225 rose 4.55%
  • The US was examining its large banks' soundness together and had decided to publish the results
  • Publishing mattered more than the examination. The lasting problem was that nobody knew how bad the banks were
  • When you do not know, you assume the worst. Publishing the numbers at least fixes the size
  • Bank shares rose sharply once the results came out
  • No single trigger can be pinned to this day
  • The dip before it was only 3.7% from the peak
