The day the chip shock crossed over
-4.15%
single-day change vs previous close
Part of a longer stretch
The same argument, shallower in Tokyo
early in it · 2026-06-25 → 2026-07-29, -15.11% over the whole period
What happened that day?
- The Nikkei 225 fell 4.15% on the day
- Doubt about artificial intelligence spending, which began with a US chip company's forecast cut in early June, was spreading across Asia
- Japan has many makers of chipmaking equipment and materials. When Korea and Taiwan cut capital spending, those orders vanish first
- So Japan is heavily exposed to the chip cycle without making the chips itself
- The fall was far smaller than the KOSPI's, because semiconductors occupy a different share of each index
- The correction ran to the end of July and ended as US technology results came in
