The seventh straight down day
-7.57%
single-day change vs previous close
What happened that day?
- 15 October 2026 — the KOSPI fell 7.57% to close at 5,554.22. No single cause can be pinned to the day
- It was the seventh straight down session, and over those seven the index lost more than a fifth
- Intraday it fell further and tripped the circuit breaker, a device that has been used several times this year
- The immediate trigger named for the day was US September consumer prices, published overnight above expectations — less room left to cut rates
- But this decline was not one day's work. Through October, warnings had been accumulating in America about the debt behind AI infrastructure: the cost of insuring one large software company's debt closed at a record, and funding terms for data-centre companies worsened
- Chinese memory makers expanding output landed on top of that. A large share of the KOSPI sits in two chip names, so it swings hardest on this combination
- Foreign investors sold on the order of trillions of won net in the session
- From the 22 June record to this day the index fell 39.06%, its lowest close since early April
