Micron's results lift Tokyo

+3.30%

single-day change vs previous close

What happened that day?

  • 1 October 2026 — the Nikkei 225 rose 3.30% to close at 68,956.72, its highest close since 17 August
  • Micron had reported its fiscal fourth quarter in the United States the night before. The results were a record, and the guidance for the next quarter came in well above what the market expected
  • Tokyo took it at the open. The release came after the US close, so the reaction landed on this session
  • The gains were concentrated in chips — test equipment, production equipment, memory and electronic components supplied most of the index's move
  • Micron's numbers mattered because memory sits at the front of AI demand. If memory sells, the equipment and components behind it sell too
  • Three months earlier the same chain had run in reverse. In July these same names collapsed on doubts that AI capital spending would ever come back as revenue
  • From the late-June record to the late-July low the index had fallen 15.11%. This close was still short of that high
