What happened that day?
- The KOSPI rose 6.6% on the day. The previous session had been the low of this decline
- The US announced a 90-day pause on its reciprocal tariffs. China was excluded
- Korea depends heavily on exports with the US as a major market, so it is directly exposed to tariffs — and reacted just as strongly to the pause
- China's exclusion cut both ways for Korea. While the US-China fight continues, the business of selling intermediate goods into China stays unsettled
- Tariffs were not removed, only deferred, but being able to plan ninety days ahead was enough to move prices
- The advance that began here ran to September, carrying the KOSPI through the three thousand level it had long been stuck below
