The Nikkei's rebound after the tariff pause
early in it · 2025-04-07 → 2025-08-12, +37.20% over the whole period
What happened that day?
- On 10 April 2025 the Nikkei 225 rose 9.13% in a single day
- The reason was the US announcing a 90-day pause on its reciprocal tariffs. China was excluded, which meant the fight between the two largest economies was untouched
- Japan is unusually exposed to tariffs given its car and machinery exports, so it also responded strongly to the pause
- The falls of the preceding days had been steep, which made the bounce large
- Tariffs were delayed rather than cancelled, but simply letting companies plan again was enough to be worth something
- The low had come on 7 April, and the rebound from here ran through to the old high on 12 August
